Make a Good 48 Hour Mega Man Level

Is that a green kettle?

Pint House Power House is the 105th place entry in Make a Good 48 Hour Mega Man Level. It is a short, entirely vertical level, consisting of crowded screens connected by a series of false floors. There is no central gimmick or challenge, with enemies and gimmicks placed haphazardly in each room.

Strategy[edit]

Not much effort is required to complete the level, as Large Health pickups are abundant and the Rain Flush can completely clear each room of enemies no matter where Mega Man is standing. The one area where care is needed is around Fork Blocks, as no weapon can affect them, and they tend to be positioned near Damage Spikes. Another hazard to watch out for are Detarnayappa spawners, marked by a series of cracked tiles in the background. Towards the end of the stage, a few tight jumps between Damage Spikes can be tricky, but with a checkpoint on the same screen (followed by another one on the very next screen), even this isn't difficult. The very end of the level is a boss fight against a Giant Suzy, in a spacious arena with Springs, Fork Blocks, and infinitely spawning Telly Xs.

When you start a level and you immediately see placeholder graphics on the spawn point, you know you're in for a rough ride. Honestly the level is just a mess of dense rooms. Box assets should be the highlights of the level, not just included. There are so many assets that when the level's over, you really have no idea what the focus is. Speaking of lack of focus, the graphics are all over the place, and most don't even look great or complete. The rooms are also really dense throughout the whole level, and dense can be good, but it doesn't really work here. The whole level is hard to look at and parse because so much is going on all the time. This feels like either a first level or a rush job, so I truly hope when you go on to make bigger and better things, you can see this as one of those weird first attempts.

Is a pint house like a bar for people who are too classy for bars but too poor for gastropubs? And if so, does that make the Spring Head the bouncer? (thinking emoji)
At least the title reflects the level itself - perplexing, and not in a good way. Still, strictly speaking, it does do some minor things right. You get one point in aesthetics for actually including a visual tell for where the Up-n-Downs spawn. You get three points in creativity for the Giant Suzy fight, which was kind of interesting. Then you lose a point in functionality for Suzy spending half the fight chilling in the top right corner. And you get one point in design for plastering health pickups everywhere. But yeah, bluntly, this was a mess - the kind of level where the judges just write WHY and give it zeroes in everything and the commentariat thinks they're giving a fair assessment.

What on earth was that? I don't even know if I need to go over what that was because I think 99% of the people who play this level will just echo the same thoughts. But just in case, let's just hit the bulletpoints. Ugly, nonsensical enemy placements, enough health to fully heal Mega Man twice over, box elements that hardly matter, floors you're supposed to fall through despite being floors, and just things thrown in rooms with little to no thought.

Trivia[edit]

  • Pint House Power House was the first level submitted for MaG48HMML. It was also submitted on the very first day of the submission period, and was made well before the creator's allotted 48 hours were up.
