Proto Man, known as Blues in Japan, is the first Robot Master created by Dr. Light. Considered the "older brother" to Rock and Roll, he first appeared in Mega Man 3 where he tested Mega Man in battle to see if he could beat Dr. Wily, as well as sometimes aiding him on his way through levels. Ever since, he has served as both an ally and occasional rival in his brother's many adventures to save the world from Wily's mad ambitions.
In the Megamix Engine, Proto Man can appear in a level via the "objProtomanEncounter" object (derived from a custom object created for Make a Good Mega Man Level 2). By default, he will destroy all onscreen boss barriers, but he can also give the player a specific item instead (similar to his Mega Man IV and Mega Man V appearances). This encounter object has a few creation code variables:
- itemDrop - Determines what object Proto Man will drop. If this is set to anything at all, Proto Man will not destroy any barriers.
- instantLeave - If set to true, Proto Man will leave immediately after performing his actions, rather than lingering for a bit.

MaGMML Series Appearances
Make a Good Mega Man Level (Remastered)
In the original Make a Good Mega Man Level, Proto Man appears in Eddie's Shop as the single unlockable costume in the game. Other than that, he makes no physical appearance. In Make a Good Mega Man Level Remastered, the costume is instead purchased from Roll's costume shop. The remake also features a cameo from Proto Man when playing with Bass Mode active; dressed in a Wood Man costume, he laments being unable to return it due to the costume shop being closed.
Make a Good Mega Man Level 2
The Proto Man costume reappears in MaGMML2 as one of the few costumes available from the start. Proto Man himself also appears as an NPC in Tier 9 if said costume isn't currently equipped. He additionally shows up in the stage Sheriff Man, where he gives Mega Man a Noble Nickel upon being discovered.
Make a Good Mega Man Level 3
For the first time in the MaGMML series, Proto Man has a significant role, if a fairly minor one. Aside from the return of the Proto Man costume (which is now available from the start), he appears in the main fifteen tiers as an NPC after that respective tier's Tier Rank has been earned. When spoken to, he will give hints towards any secrets that are located in the current tier (or general reminders about main game content, if the tier has no major secrets). Occasionally, he will also appear in the Victor Heights hotel as an NPC as the game progresses.
In the final Wily Stadium stage, The Greatest Show of All Time, Proto Man appears after all five rivals are defeated, and is revealed to be the mystery eighth finalist and the last remaining contestant besides Mega Man. However, instead of fighting Mega Man, he opens the path to the main stadium grounds with his Proto Strike and forfeits, opting to let the world see Mega Man take on Dr. Wily. He gifts Mega Man a Yashichi, E-Tank, and M-Tank before teleporting out.
Make a Good 48 Hour Mega Man Level
Proto Man returns as a purchaseable costume in the SS Elroy's Double Action Boutique. Proto Man also appears as an NPC in Tier 11, standing at the top right corner past first place. When talked to, he will comment on Mega Man's current costume if he's wearing one – and will even wear a costume of Mega Man himself if the Proto Man or Break Man costume is in use. In the level Cossack's Playground, Proto Man briefly appears halfway through to give Mega Man an E-Tank.
Make a Good Mega Man Level: Episode Zero
Proto Man has a brief cameo during the game's credits, where he is seen dueling Bass in a mountain area that looks similar to that of Surveillance Canyon. Their battle is interrupted when both see a portal to Tier X briefly open up in the sky.
Proto Man Mode
MaGMML2, MaGMML1R, MaG48HMML, and MaGMML3 feature Proto Man as a playable character through the "Proto Man Mode" cheat. When activated, Mega Man will be replaced by Proto Man, who plays as he does in Mega Man 9 and Mega Man 10. When jumping, he uses his Proto Shield to reflect enemy projectiles, and he has a unique Charge Shot design and sound (if the Charged Buster upgrade is active in 2 and 1R, it will override said design). However, he also takes twice as much damage as Mega Man, and is knocked back twice as far after taking a hit. The Rush Coil and Rush Jet are replaced with the Proto Coil and Proto Jet respectively, but the difference is entirely cosmetic. In MaGMML2 and MaGMML1R, Proto Man cannot change costumes, as in both games the Costume Shop is closed if the cheat is active.
In MaG48HMML, the main story's dialogue is significantly rewritten while Proto Man Mode is active, though it still follows the same beats. He can still enter Double Action Boutique (and still activate the Love Survivor sidequest), but will be unable to purchase or change costumes. A file with Proto Man Mode active will act as if all costumes have been bought for file completion percent purposes, while the costume icon on the file select will be replaced with a mark of Proto Man's head.
In MaGMML3, Proto Man's playstyle is significantly revamped from previous games. The Proto Buster can now charge and store up to four regular Charge Shots, each of which can be fired at will. By holding up while shooting a fully charged buster with four stored shots, Proto Man will fire the Proto Strike: a larger, stronger Charge Shot that pierces shields and leaves a large explosion on impact. Additionally, Proto Man now takes an extra two points of damage from enemy attacks, rather than twice the damage. The Rush Bike also gets replaced with a new "Proto Bike", but like the Proto Coil and Proto Jet, there is little functional difference.
As with MaG48HMML, Proto Man Mode in MaGMML3 features significantly rewritten dialogue and cutscenes, including a number of completely brand new cutscenes, to accomodate for Proto Man's increased role in the main story. A number of areas and NPCs also change when Proto Man Mode is active; for instance, the Hotel Room becomes the Victor Heights roof, Dr. Light is replaced with Kalinka, and Mega Man takes Proto Man's place in the tiers. However, like MaG48HMML, the fundamental structure of the plot remains unchanged from the base game.
