Make a Good Mega Man Level: Episode Zero

"Hello, what is up?"
"Mate, we're down below here."

Subterranean Stronghold is the tenth level in Chapter 1 of Make a Good Mega Man Level: Episode Zero. After making his way through a long-forgotten Wily Castle, Zero enters an underground tunnel network filled with Dr. Wily's security robots (including the Mega Man Killer Punk) to reach the mainland where his newest hideout lies. The level is focused more on platforming than on fighting enemies, with Up'n'Down Platforms acting as the primary gimmick used to cross pits and spikes, though Crash Lift rail rides are also a common sight.

After completing the level for the first time, a cutscene where Zero encounters SRARA Shield Attacker and SRARA Up n' Down plays; this cutscene doesn't repeat on any subsequent playthroughs.

Strategy

The start of the level introduces Up'n'Down Platforms over solid terrain, while a La Jaba and Totem Polen block the way. The next few screens introduce Crash Lifts riding over or near spikes, while Morning Joes guard some Bolts; both can be skipped if Zero wishes. More Crash Lifts are needed to cross a spike-lined floor (with some rails leading directly under the spikes), while the next screen over has Up'n'Down Platforms reaching up to a ladder while a Wall Blaster fires at Zero. Two more Up'n'Down Platforms fly out of a pit near a Twin Shooter S and a boss door, the latter of which leads to a fight against a Twin Shooter G.

Beyond another Morning Joe is a bottomless pit with two Up'n'Down Platforms, with the only solid ground at the far left. Fortunately, if Zero is too close to the pit to make the leap, a well-timed jump before the Up'n'Down Platforms go offscreen will allow the next one to catch him as it flies up. After a stretch of minor enemies, a vertical scrolling spike drop appears with Drop Platforms as the only safe areas to stand on. Careful airdashes and jumps will see Zero through safely. Two dangerous screens contain a Wall Blaster and Twin Shooter S alongside a kind of platform; one with Up'n'Down Platforms rising over a pit and three-tile-high spikes, the other with a long winding Crash Lift rail. Three more Up'n'Down Platforms later, and the boss door lies behind a Totem Polen.

Ah, that tunnel. That's probably the most direct route to the base. Didn't you run into... Punk? There?

I don't have all of their shifts memorized! And yet they still get mad at me.

Other than that, it's mostly just security and digging robots. Exciting, I know.

That area's home to some Up'n'Down platforms.

Though they look like an enemy, they're actually harmless and helpful for getting across pits.

There's also Morning Joes, whose morning stars will block your shots.

The most troublesome though will be the Twin Shooters, they shoot lasers that are a bit hard to dodge.

Thankfully they aren't instant-death, though.

ZPhoneYamato.png Yamato Man Yamato Man: Punk?

He's true to his name, alright! Last I heard, he went to a paint store and got someone to do a paint job on him since
he got messed up in a battle.

The painter was a professional, I tell ya! But they missed one tiny spot on one of Punk's genie shoes when they
finished, and you know what happened next?

That spiky jerk trashed the entire place, said the paint job was about as good as a toddler's drawing, and left without
paying. What an ungrateful... punk! AAAGH, LOOK WHAT HE MADE ME DO!!!

Zero: Sounds like he needs to be taught a lesson...that I could use some help teaching, if you do not mind.

Yamato Man: Oh, right! Stay far away from him when he's bouncing, and pay attention to the height he stops at.

Dash under him if he's going high, or airdash in the air over him if he's going low.

ZPhoneKnives.png Knives Knives: Well, it's not super bad, but when we sit down on our date, that red clay gets all over your clothes.

Yeah, I could just bring a towel, but I used my last one the other day!

Zero: ...Used?

Knives: Anyways, red clay, no-go. It kinda looks like blood, but that's not enough of an upside!

After that incident from my childhood, me and clay aren't on speaking terms anymore!

So find somewhere without it, okay? Thanks!

Notes

  • Like every Chapter 1 level, all the spikes in Subterranean Stronghold are non-lethal Damage Spikes that do 7 points of damage when touched.
