At first, Vanguard will fly up and down the right side of the screen, randomly using one of three attacks:
- Shoot two arrow-shaped homing projectiles.
- Shoot a group of small orbs that slowly float forward. These orbs block Mega Man's shots.
- Charge up and shoot two energy blasts.
When Vanguard's first health bar is depleted, it will pull green spikes to the top and bottom of the screen, then resume with the above pattern. While Vanguard moves around, the spikes on both sides will thrust outwards in wave formations. Vanguard will also periodically stop its normal pattern to make the spikes thrust out in special patterns.
Once Vanguard's second health bar has been depleted, an apparent third health bar will appear. Vanguard will become invincible, and summon giant lasers (roughly one-third the size of the screen) in the following pattern:
- Top and bottom
- Top and middle
The first middle laser will end up hitting Vanguard, draining its supposed third health bar very quickly. As a result, Vanguard will be defeated once this pattern of lasers is finished, as the bottom laser finishes it off.
