It is your destiny! This article contains content on an upcoming game. Beware of any potential spoilers!
Gimmicks are a type of obstacle used to enhance a level and provide a challenge in a way enemies often can't. Unlike enemies, gimmicks come in all sorts of varieties; some are little more than fancy types of platform, others can radically affect progression through a level. In the Mega Man franchise, gimmicks are often (though not always) themed around the stage's aesthetic and that of the Robot Master; for instance, Nitro Man's stage features Nitro Trucks that try to ram into Mega Man, but can be jumped on and used as fast-travel through a long stretch of a level (and shooting a traffic light stops them from appearing).
The series has a vast swathe of gimmicks across each game, and a majority of these have been carried over into each contest's devkit. Notably, as of the current build of the Megamix Engine, the only missing gimmick from the NES games is Star Man's asteroids from Mega Man 5.
Like with enemies and bosses, some custom gimmicks have featured in the MaGMML series's myriad entries. Some are adaptations of another game's gimmick, while others are brand new ones reminiscent of the classic gimmicks.
More information on each gimmick's specific behavior and appearances can be found on their own pages.
