The Hornet Roll is a gimmick in Mega Man 9, found in Hornet Man's stage. It is a rolled-up platform that can extend to its full length when shot.
Hornet Rolls were first included in the Megamix Engine, and subsequently all devkits derived from it. Its debut in a MaGMML game came with Make a Good 48 Hour Mega Man Level, where the entries Weapon Testing Facility and Footloose used it; it made an additional appearance in the Box Cartel stage Pandora's Parlor.
Behavior
When shot with a weapon, Hornet Rolls uncurl and form a long top-solid platform for Mega Man to traverse. A short while after reaching their maximum length, though, Hornet Rolls will curl back in on themselves completely, leaving nothing solid to stand on. Afterwards, they return to their original state.
Hornet Rolls have a number of creation code variables:
- extendX - Determines the maximum length of a Hornet Roll (by default, this is set to 128 pixels).
- timeRestExtend - Determines how long an extended Hornet Roll takes to retract.
- timeRestRetract - Determines how long a retracted Hornet Roll takes to reset.
