- "A gimmick from Crystal Man's stage. It spawns crystals every so often. They fall down. Heck yeah."
- ―Note in Crystal Generator's code, Megamix Engine
The Crystal Generator is a gimmick in Mega Man 5, found in Crystal Man's stage. It is a spawner that routinely drops falling crystals.
Crystal Generators were first made available in the devkit for the original Make a Good Mega Man Level, where they appeared in the entries Hard to See Land and Glass Man, as well as in the Wily stages Hall of Fame and Flashback Database.
Crystal Generators returned in Make a Good Mega Man Level 2, and appeared in the entries Starman Recreation and Escape Sequence, as well as in the Pit of Pits sublevel "Glass Man?", and in Null and Void. They also appeared in the Make a Good Mega Man Level: Episode Zero stages String Theory and Null and Void.
Behavior
Crystal Generators create crystals every few seconds, which then fall down and off the screen. Unlike their original appearance in Mega Man 5, Crystal Generators are more predictable in when they produce crystals, as they work on a timer. While the falling crystals can't be hit by most weapons, shield weapons such as the Jewel Satellite and Water Shield can reflect or destroy them, and the Black Hole Bomb is able to pull them into itself.
The Crystal Generators used in Glass Man and Hall of Fame have invisible objects under them that destroy the crystal (a stand-in for glass) and create falling shards, giving the illusion that the object has shattered. A similar trick is used for their appearance in The Pit of Pits in Make a Good Mega Man Level 2.
By default, Crystal Generators create crystals every two seconds (or one second in Make a Good Mega Man Level); however, by setting the "interval" variable to a different number via creation code, a Crystal Generator can spawn crystals at a faster or slower rate.
