"It can obscure the terrain by creating a hologram that causes the whole screen to go black"
―Note in Hologran's code, Megamix Engine

Hologran is an enemy from Mega Man 3. It is a machine that produces holograms that obscure the environment, making it one of Dr. Wily's proudest inventions.

Hologran was first made available in the devkit for the original Make a Good Mega Man Level, but wasn't used in any entry stages. It did make an appearance in the Wily stage Cannon Deck, both as a regular enemy and as one of the Ghost of Mega Man 3's summons. Make a Good Mega Man Level Remastered removed it from the new version of the stage, but used it in its redesigned iteration of Flashback Database (with a unique sprite).

It returned in Make a Good Mega Man Level 2, and appeared in the stages Colorful Hall, Neon Man (where it had a unique variant), Shovel Knight, Volcanic Furnace, Ruined Lab, and But It Lacked the Depth to Convince Me That This is Really Hell. It also appeared in the Wily Stage Reality Core, and the Pit of Pits sublevel "Mega Lift". It also appeared in the Make a Good 24 Hour Mega Man Level stage Nauseous Greenhouse, and the Make a Good 48 Hour Mega Man Level stage Cloudy City.

In Make a Good Mega Man Level 3, Hologran was used in the entries You Don't Know the Drill, The Return of Veteran Z, and (in a slightly modified state) ArcaneMan -CHAOS TOWER- (CERN HQ Remains).

Behavior

Hologran slowly moves towards Mega Man, creating a holographic black field of stars over the entire screen to obscure the terrain. Though entities like enemies and Mega Man himself remain visible, navigation is made more difficult. If Hologran is destroyed or moves offscreen, the hologram vanishes and the view returns to normal.

In Make a Good Mega Man Level 2, the Holograns in Neon Man function like their default iterations, but they remain stationary and use a looping image of the room for a hologram instead of the starfield. One regular Hologran in the stage acts similarly, with the starfield hologram replaced with City War's background.

Notes

  • In MaGMML2, there is a 1 in 1000 chance that a Hologran will instead create an image of Mega Man against a rainbow background, referencing the viral video "HEYYEYAAEYAAAEYAEYAA" (or, as it is less commonly known, "Fabulous Secret Powers").
