Make a Good 48 Hour Mega Man Level

You didn't.

IHOPEIWIN is the 99th place entry in Make a Good 48 Hour Mega Man Level, despite its wishes to the contrary. A partially ice-themed level, it is mostly a troll level, much like Rbade's previous level. Most of its runtime is based on running past Presses of variable lengths while thick snow limits Mega Man's running speed.

Strategy[edit]

A free E-Tank rests on the bottom of the first screen, guarded only by a pair of Mono Roaders. There isn't much to the first third of the level beyond trudging through Cossack Snow while waiting for Presses to drop and rise back up. The only enemies to be found are Mono Roaders (who are very weak to the Search Snake), Lightning Lords that lack clouds and are thus ineffective at long ranges, and Oshitsu Osarettsus. Multiple short pits litter the land, but all of them are fairly small and easy to avoid. During the second section, a horizontal Press extends out to almost the entire length of the area, requiring caution both when it retracts and when it's about to trigger again. A Mono Roader guards a ladder leading downwards, and is best killed with the Rain Flush if it keeps shielding itself.

Down below, the level switches to a cavernous tileset as horizontal Presses line the left wall. Each one is positioned one block off the ground, so sliding is the best way to avoid them. After the first checkpoint, there is a long stretch of ground with Presses slamming into small banks of Cossack Snow. While waiting is the safest option, the Tengu Blade's dash can be used to safely pass through the Presses and bypass the snow's slowing effect, though an Oshitsu Osarettsu at the end will try to ambush Mega Man. After an area filled with Mono Roaders is a room with two Presses on either side. Do not enter the next section by jumping, otherwise Mega Man will likely get stuck in the right wall and die. Said section has multiple ladders close to wall-mounted Presses, with a checkpoint and a Yashichi at the very top.

The last section is another long snow stretch, with two very long Presses on the leftmost wall. Once again, beware of hitting them while they retract, and be sure to move fast enough to avoid triggering them again from a distance. The end of the level lacks a boss door, but is guarded by an Oshitsu Osarettsu on a small platform next to a pit. Since there is no room to face it normally, it must be destroyed either with Special Weapons, or by shooting through the wall in a small alcove level with it. The boss corridor contains an E-Tank, W-Tank, M-Tank, and Yashichi all stacked on top of each other, with the boss being Chill Man and Solar Man. However, since there isn't a boss door, Mega Man can easily stay on the top entrance and use the Rain Flush to kill both bosses (particularly Solar Man) without getting hit.

This is my favorite "bad" level. First of all, I don't know if this is actually true, but it definitely feels like the music gets progressively louder as the level goes on. I really thought this was gonna be like any other bad level, but it's so much more. The music just makes it feel like you're slowly going insane as it gets louder. The last time I played it my ears literally started ringing near the end, which was weird. Everything does so much damage and you die so often. However, I feel like dying isn't the bad part, but the slow burn of the music burning a mark into your consciousness; and really, some of the things you do with the crushers are pretty cool, even if a large part of the level is repetitive. Then, the best moment of the level is near the end where you have the long horizontal crushers. The moment of you just hearing the sound when you're most of the way through the room and a sneak attack killing you made me laugh hysterically. I can't really say that this is a good level, but I can say that I found the whole experience to be really funny and memorable. By the way, I hope you win too.

Oh boy, do I get to make a meme review now? Uhm...uhmmmmm...the music was loud. Clearly, I'm not a comedian...

Ok, no memes from me. Not this time, anyway.

The most obvious problem here is the horizontal crushers, which come from completely out of nowhere, but I don't think those are the actual problem with the level; actually, I sort of liked the crusher section with the ladders towards the end. The main problem here, I think, is that the enemies are either totally negligible or extremely difficult to take out, with no middle ground, which means that most of the level is just...walking, and jumping. It doesn't help that the omnipresent snow on the ground makes the level drag on much longer than it needs to.
I'd also like to give a brief shout-out to the unintentionally hilarious boss fight, which can be cleared without even setting foot into the arena. This is what boss doors are for!

Do I have some bad news for you...

I'm real glad that for the most part this level was nothing but wait for some crushers and uhh... wait for some more crushers. But you're also on snow half the time to make your movement real slow and then you... wait for some crushers. Oh but there's an enemy! Oh, waiting for some crushers... Then you have crushers that go across an entire long screen, which is a creative idea, but terrible in execution because after it goes back once, you have absolutely zero way to predict exactly how long it'll take to not only shoot out again, but to reach your current position on the screen. I'll tell you, it's the closest thing to a jumpscare I've seen implemented.
But when a level pretty much turns into an extended waiting game with nothing else going on, there's not much else to say.

Trivia[edit]

  • On submission, IHOPEIWIN's music was considerably louder, before having its volume lowered for the final game.
