Make a Good 48 Hour Mega Man Level

Of course you pick the homing weapon. EVERYONE picks the homing weapon.

Weapon Testing Facility is the 44th place entry in Make a Good 48 Hour Mega Man Level. Less of a level and more of a shooting gallery/playground for Special Weapons, it completely disables the Mega Buster and gives almost every single weapon infinite ammunition, except for the Rain Flush and Concrete Shot (which are also disabled), as well as Rush and Beat (both of whom have normal ammo usage). The level is also set up so that at the halfway point, Mega Man effectively backtracks through the stage while fighting through large hordes of enemies that weren't previously there.

Since the Mega Buster is disabled and Special Weapons have infinite ammo, weapon usage is outright forced, but just about anything works. However, the Homing Sniper and Flame Mixer tend to be more useful on average than other weapons.

The first half of the stage is very light on enemies, with falling Junk Blocks as the most common hazard (alongside harmless stationary Junk Blocks resting on the ground). One room has an infinite set of Junk Blocks falling onto spikes, which can only be crossed by striking a Hornet Roll to make a temporary platform for the falling blocks to land on. After several uneventful rooms, Mega Man comes upon a teleporter to the second half of the level, which involves going backwards through previous rooms while numerous enemies appear. Soon afterwards, three minibosses (a Squidon, a Moby, and a Tama) are fought all at once, but all three are very weak to the Salt Water, which can also hit all of them thanks to its splitting and penetrating abilities.

In rooms with clusters of green Petit Devils, the Flame Mixer is ideal since it kills the clones as soon as they spawn (though it may not always protect Mega Man from damage). It is also useful as a means of blocking Wall Blaster II and Tondeall shots: in this level, both enemies fire much more rapidly than normal. Towards the end of the level, Tondealls become more frequent, and appear alongside Petit Devil clusters and Picket Men who throw their axes from high up, again greatly encouraging Flame Mixer usage. The boss of the level is Quick Man, who has five healthbars for a total of 140 HP, but every single weapon (except Beat) kills him in one shot.

UNLIMITED SHOTS WITH HOMING SNIPER WOOOOOOOO!!!! Like, you're just so overpowered in this stage it's amazing. All the enemies just feel like they are there for you to mow down, and when they actually are a threat they're in these massive rooms where you figure out how to deal with the horde in front of you (hint: Homing Sniper is always the answer). Even if it's spam, it's still legit fun. At that point, it's not even spam. The junk and Hornet platforms go well together, and the way the rooms are set up compliments the weapons. I think more unique rooms where weapons other than Homing Sniper can solve your issues would be nice, but it's okay because I like Homing Sniper. The room with the junk generator where you have to pause it with the Hornet platform is especially good. The Quick Man fight is also perfect, thank you.

P.S. Homing Sniper is really good in this stage.

Is that Touhou music I hear? You get a cookie for that. The stage itself is a fun playground for (almost) all of the weapons! The rooms all give you a few separate options in approaching them, and I would have loved it even more, if Homing Sniper wasn't the most overpowered thing ever. Still, it's a blast to play through, and the music is an extra bonus for me!

I freely admit my bias: I like to play Mega Man buster-only whenever possible, and I approached judging much the same way, so having my trusty buster taken away from me rustled my jimmies. But sure, there is some giddy joy that comes with getting to spam the most powerful weapons in the game. Unfortunately, that joy isn't present here. For a level built around using your special weapons, there sure aren't that many chances for you to use most of them here. "Flame Mixer Testing Facility" would probably be more accurate: nothing else is useful against the onslaught of enemy projectiles in the second half of the level, much as I wanted to do some clever Salt Water trick shots, or just go to town on a row of enemies with Homing Sniper.
That's probably where this level flops: infinite ammo is fun because it gives you the capacity to spam X and wipe out an entire screen's worth of enemies, but this level goes out of its way to deny you that joy. The first half of the level is full of screens where most of your weapons are useless - some of the screens (like the one with the descending staircase of Junk Blocks) outright encourage you not to shoot! Even the Quick Man fight is like that: can you imagine how fun it would be to slaughter an i-frame-less Quick Man with Homing Sniper spam? Sorry, he'll die in one hit instead.
I think there's a version of this level that's really smart and really fun where the puzzle setups are built around using your entire weaponset; I think there's a version of this level that's really dumb and really *really* fun where you just cream Big Eyes for days. This level is neither. Talk about squandered potential.

See, when you design a level for a level design contest, you have to remember to make the level. What we have here is a spectacle. You've given us unlimited ammo (a.k.a. Homing Sniper) and tell us to go wild with a ton of enemies... and that's mostly it. The gimmicks are present yet hardly matter. There was one room where the junk blocks and Hornet Rolls interacted in a unique way and that was pretty much it. The rest of the level stemmed down to, "How quickly can you kill these enemies with your unlimited Homing Sniper!". It's like one of those Mario Maker 2 levels where you hold down and watch a lot of fancy effects. It kinda looks neat, but a level it is not.

  • Weapon Testing Facility's second half is a separate room file, making it the only MaG48HMML entry to use more than one room file.
  • Of MaG48HMML's entries, Weapon Testing Facility has the second-highest difference between its highest and lowest judge scores (bearing a difference of, coincidentally, 48 points), beaten only by Crashing in the Dark.
