Explosives Factory

40th: Explosives Factory

Make a Good Mega Man Level 3

Where's OSHA when you need them?

Explosives Factory is the 40th place entry in Make a Good Mega Man Level 3 made by MarsJenkar. The level takes place inside the titular factory, which is experiencing both an attack by a "madman" as well as a number of hazards that would probably lead to OSHA intervention. You'll encounter many explosive-themed enemies along the way, as well as Count Bombs and conveyor belts.

Strategy

The player spawns in a room with a couple of signs, one stating the date of the incident (November 25, 2018), and the other containing a communicator speaking with a member of the factory's management, who outlines the scenario (a madman is somewhere in the factory and is threatening to blow it up). Head right to encounter (in order) a Bomber Pepe, a Walking Bomb, and a Killer Bullet. Sticking to the upper path (across some Count Bombs) will lead the player to some Bolts, while the lower path only contains more enemies. Further right is a path leading to some more Bolts, as well as the first of a number of journal entries left by one of the workers. Head down to continue into a room filled with Count Bomb setups, properly introducing players to a number of quirks regarding how they work. The next room continues introducing new setups. Continuing right will lead the player across a number of Count Bomb jumps punctuated by Killer Bullets (with Walking Bombs and Bomber Pepes patrolling the floor below); successfully navigating this path will lead to the first of four Trickster Tokens. Regardless of the path taken, the player encounters their first checkpoint in this room, as well as another journal entry.

The room continues with more Count Bomb setups over progressively more hazardous terrain, first over fire (which damages the player but is not instantly lethal), then over spikes (which are lethal if the player is not invincible). The end of the room contains yet another journal entry. The next room begins with a Bomber Pepe and a Killer Bullet on the far right of the screen, easily dispatched. Continuing right leads to a couple more Killer Bullets, and the first Bombomb. These only spawn once over each pit (unless scrolled offscreen and respawned), and the pits they emerge from are marked with a caution sign, as well as a red stop sign where the bomb is set to explode. There are two more Bombombs in this room, with the third one requiring the player to set it off before attempting to jump next to its pit. At the end of the room is a path leading down, as well as a side path leading to the right. Explore the side path first.

This room contains a checkpoint, a journal entry, and a jumping puzzle leading to the second Trickster Token. The challenge is to jump across the Count Bombs to the right-hand part of the screen without setting off the Count Bombs above you. Doing so successfully leaves the downward-facing Count Bombs as platforms that the player can use to access the Token. Exit the room the same way you came in, then in the next room, go down.

Miniboss

You will land in a red room with a caution sign and a checkpoint. Entering the boss door leads to a fight against the stage's miniboss, Emperor Pepe. Back away from his overhead bombs, and destroy the eggs he throws your way. Shoot him repeatedly to defeat him and open the way forward.

The next room contains a checkpoint, and introduces the player to conveyors, combined with some Killer Bullets and the threat of falling into damaging fire. The next room begins with another journal entry, but more importantly shows another Bombomb setup, this time with conveyors over a long bottomless pit. At the end of this setup, the player can jump to a Count Bomb at the start of a slide passage, leading to an optional room to the left.

This challenge room (which contains another checkpoint) is fairly straightforward, but tricky due to the placement of spikes. First slide left through the passage above to clear away two Count Bombs protecting the rest of the puzzle, then slide right to enter the puzzle proper. Navigating it successfully nets you the third Trickster Token. To exit, set off the Count Bomb above the Token spot, then return the way you came. After that, slide right, drop to the floor, and climb the ladder down.

The next room (which contains yet another checkpoint) is a maze-like room with several Count Bombs and spikes as hazards. Trigger the Count Bombs needed to navigate the room. Eventually you'll get to a point with a slide passage right and left. Sliding right will net the player a Weapon Tank but sliding too far will impale the player on the spike. Sliding left too far will also drop you onto a spike. The easiest way to proceed is to successfully collect the Weapon Tank first; your momentum from sliding back to the left should carry you through the slide passage but stop you from sliding too far. After that, finishing the room is straightforward. Drop down into the next room, which contains a Key Barrier and a key. The challenge is straightforward; the tricky part is avoiding being carried into the spikes by the conveyor. After that is another Count Bomb puzzle over spikes, and the final journal entry. Continue right.

The beginning of the room contains a checkpoint. This final room contains a mixture of Count Bombs, conveyors, and enemies (including more Bombombs. Near the end is one final Count Bomb puzzle high up; successfully passing it without falling to the ground (or into the pit) will net you the final Trickster Token. Continue through the boss door on the right.

In the corridor outside the boss room (which contains the final checkpoint), you encounter another communicator. This time you speak to the person who wrote the journal entries, who informs you that the factory is being evacuated.

Boss

A short cutscene ensues before the start of the fight against Blue Bomber Man, which is Bomb Man with: a new coat of paint, marginally stronger resistances against the Mega Buster and his weakness (Magnetic Shockwave), a couple of new attacks (he now throws bombs straight up and down at the peak of his high jumps, and occasionally throws three bombs at once), and a tweaked AI that leads to him jumping slightly more often. The fight is mostly like Bomb Man's, but requires consideration to avoid the new attacks (slide to get past the upward bomb throws, and slide away when he throws the triple bomb).

Judge Comments

Coming as soon as the judge template is created.

Trivia

  • By default, the tokens in this stage are colored blue (though the diamond token retains its "white" look). This was in response to complaints in testing that the spade token wasn't visible against the stage background and was thus easily missed.
  • A secret exists just before the miniboss. Walk right from the top of the crates in the right-hand part of the room; you will pass through the wall into a developer's room. This contains an NPC based off the level creator, Crash Man as a second NPC, a monitor giving credits for various stage assets, and some bolts.
  • The miniboss Emperor Pepe is a significantly modified devkit miniboss, Gamarn and Gamadayu. The latter's laser attack was replaced with a double egg throw, and the overhead bomb throw was tweaked (early testing had the bombs landing well short of the player's position).
  • The "current date" of the level, November 25, 2018, was the deadline for submissions for the contest. The final journal entry has a date of November 22, three days before.
