I wonder who made this level.

Smed's Big Annoying Mess of a Level is the 24th place level in Make a Good Mega Man Level 2. It is a simple level with no particular gimmicks, instead relying mostly on enemy challenges.

Strategy[edit]

The level starts with a mostly empty open area, save for a few Metloons and a Toad Joe. Dropping down leads to two rooms where Metloons and Toad Joes are briefly used underwater, with Mega Man returning to dry land partway through the second of these rooms. The following three rooms are a cave area, where Mega Man must avoid Acid Drops, a single Metloon, a single Toad Joe, and several Hammer Men. At the end of the second of these rooms, below a Hammer Man, is the level's Noble Nickel. Climbing up the third of these rooms leads to a mostly empty room, with Eddie present to give Mega Man an item. Going through the boss gate on the right leads to the battle against Komuso Man?.

After defeating Komuso Man?, going to the right will lead to four rooms with a bone-themed design, and several Skeleton Joes appearing alongside the pre-established Metloons, Toad Joes, and Acid Drops. Exiting the fourth room takes Mega Man back outside, with a final Toad Joe, three final Metloons, and a single Fatool standing in his way. Continuing to the right, the architecture starts to disappear into black nothingness, leading to the battle against Final Toad.

Hey don't be so hard on yourself this level is pretty good :(. The level is pretty simple when it comes to gameplay, but honestly it's to its benefit because it's just simple, well-designed enemy challenges. It sets up a group of enemies in the beginning and combines them and uses them in different environments througout, and I think it plays really well. I'd say the only enemy that doesn't really get used is the hammer guy, but honestly I don't mind that because I found the hammer guy pretty annoying to actually deal with. Level's also pretty funny too, with the TOAD JOES and the weirdo fight with Komosu Man and the actually pretty difficult Toad Man fight at the end. It's just a really solidly built and designed level in general. Also fun thing, none of your projectiles get reflected with Jewel Satellite, they just kinda...hang out in midair. This let me have some...fun in the Toad Man fight :3.

This level wasn't big, and it wasn't annoying, but it WAS a mess. There were a few nice enemy skins, and I loved fighting the custom Komuso Man miniboss, but the level got progressively worse, both graphically and design-wise. It went from a normal level to a level with messy tiles (what was up with the random Skull Man tileset?) to flat rooms with enemies to an all-black room with Toad Man. Judging by the name and design, I don't think this is a serious level.

What a charming level! It's pretty simple but super fun to play and throws in a horizontal komuso to keep things interesting (is he a frog too?). There's a bit of a difficulty spike near the beginning where getting hit is very easy to send the player falling down, but aside from that the difficulty ramps up decently. The Toad Man boss at the end is pretty intense, though I don't know why charged shots deal as much damage as the regular buster. Feels kinda limiting (especially since all other weapons do nothing).

It's… not that great. Either you can just avoid all enemies altogether, either you have to deal with too many enemies at once, or you need to fight the bosses that are poorly designed. I think the last boss kinda ruined it for me. Generally most of the level was still enjoyable, but the boss just makes it really, really uncomfortable. Well, at least it's pretty good here. I think the fusion of existing mega man enemies is pretty great and the bosses are pretty creative still. Looks alright, but has some rough edges at some places. Works just fine.

It's not a horrible level, but it's not amazing either. Most of the level design isn't awful, but still has pretty poor enemy placement, generally consisting of being able to avoid them without effort or being bombarded by too many of them. For me, what really hurts the level is the main boss, who is unfair and is ultimately annoying to defeat. On the bright side, I gotta say I liked the designs of the enemies, the level looks good, and I still enjoyed the level despite what I mentioned previously.

You got me. Nice trick with the rematches.

The boss battles are by far and away the highlight of this level, as they really work with your expectations and throw them for a loop. The first was the stronger of the two, but they were both pretty fun to fight, and the second one did murder me a couple of times before I got the timing down.

The custom assets are also pretty dandy, with your new enemies being really clever, even though one is a reskin, you play with it enough that it feels fairly fresh, and the other new enemy is hilarious.

Where this stage falters is, it's basically just enemies and a boss or two, and nothing else. You really needed gimmicks here, and the lack of them hurt your level. One of the other problems I had was the clash of tilesets - I... don't get it. At all. I suspect that this may be a reference to something else, but I can't confirm this whilst reviewing, since I don't even know your name yet, and even so, said reference will fly over most people's heads. Aesthetically you probably should've just stuck to the initial tileset, which looked nice.

Trivia[edit]

  • This level includes some inside jokes relating to Smedis:
    • The Metloons are designed and named after Swadloon from the Pokemon series of video games. At the time, Smedis' profile picture was that of a Swadloon.
    • The Skeleton Joes and Skull Man tiles later in the stage are a reference to the fangame Skull Man Kills, which was made by Smedis.
  • Because judging for MaGMML2 was meant to be anonymous, the level was referred to as "[REDACTED]'s Big Annoying Mess of a Level" during judging.
